Pulpit Stories

When I was about 16, I remember Bishop DuBois telling me that "There's no such thing as coincidences." As simple as that was, I've always taken that advice to heart, and try to find the silver lining to every situation that I can't explain, or every person that I meet. I feel like there's something to learn, and a way to grow, from everything that happens.

What that has to do with what I'm about to talk about? Very little actually, but I just felt like saying it.

My favorite part of sacrament meeting (in a family ward, of course), is when a new couple gives a talk for the first time. It always is so fun to listen to the story of how they met. There's been people who were childhood/high school sweethearts. Others who met at family home evening. Some who were friends for a long time, and then realized they were in love. I especially like the ones where they really couldn't stand each other, but eventually fell for each other. It's just so fun, and it actually keeps my attention (Sometimes I swear I have an attention issue. I can't sit in one place for a long period of time, just listening . . .).

Anyways, after growing up and hearing so many of these stories, I can't help but hope that one day I'll have some awesome story to tell over the pulpit that will make adolescent girls like I once was (So long ago. . .) sigh. So pretty much, with almost every guy I know, whether or not I am attracted to him or not, at one point or another I think about what our story would be. Seriously, sometimes I've become more attracted to a boy because I think we'd have an awesome meeting story. I know that other people do this as well, so don't pin me as weird. But I just think it's awesome. It just seems like with most people, there's always a series of events that occur that cause them to be in one another's lives, and it's just cool to be able to analyze that and see what decisions were made to have that occur. Which brings me back to my original thought, that there's no such thing as coincidences :)

As I was thinking about this, I remembered how me and one of my bestest friends Megan met. It would seriously be the best pulpit story, if she was replaced with a boy. Alas, she is not. But I find it somewhat humorous, so I shall share it:

Just for visual purposes, this is a picture of Megan. And obviously me. At senior prom.

You know how in middle school, you always write in someones yearbook "Call me!" but no one ever actually does? Well, on the last day of 8th grade, everyone gathered in the commons of Ken Caryl Middle School. It was a huge mass of people trying to write their memories in 5 minutes or less. Well, during this time, a random girl came up to me and asked me to sign her yearbook. I honestly don't even think I knew who she was, except that she was Mormon. I had never once talked to her (that I remember), or even knew her name. I actually do remember writing in her yearbook something like "Have a great summer! Call me!" and writing my number, and then thinking how dumb that was afterwards, since I didn't even know her. I was kind of in autopilot at that point.

Well, about half way through the summer, I get a random phone call. It was Megan. She was asking if I wanted to come over to her house and hang out. I feel like my mom knew her family or something, so it was fine for me to go over. I went over there, and we hung out. I have weird, random memories from that day, like one of her brothers running around upstairs, her reading me things out of her journal (weird. yes), and then we walked to King Soopers to get raspberries to make raspberry jam with her mom. I feel like at that point, Megan had to go to achievement days, and I ended up making jam with her mom. Though she may have still been there at that point. It was just an awkward situation either way. Afterwards, her mom drove me home. The Bezzants have a huge van, with big steps that are far from the ground. Well her mom dropped me off, I ended up tripping down the stairs, falling flat on the sidewalk of my house. The jam jar I was holding shattered everywhere, and it was quite embarassing. I vowed to never go there again.

Well, that ended up not happening. The next year, our first year of high school, we ended up having the same lunch, and, with the rest of the Mormon kids who had lunch at that time, we sat together. For some reason, she also would come and listen to the daily announcements in my choir class, and we would obnoxiously say the pledge of alleigeance every day. And from then on, we've been really good friends, and I'd be so sad without her.

So, cross your fingers that I'll have an awesome story to tell of how my husband and I met and fell in love. I'm pretty sure that even if I don't, I'll embelish whatever there is so it's really exciting over the pulpit....But I'm hoping that won't have to happen. hehe.

Speaking of Megan, she brought to my attention about last year that I always seem to like the same type of guy, physically wise. Her description is "tall, skinny, dark hair, green eyes, and slightly nerdy." As I think about it, I feel like this is a very accurate conclusion. With the exception of probably two guys, this is pretty much the exact description. It's really kind of weird, actually. I'll show her though, and marry a buff, 5'8, blonde hair, blue eyed person. HA. But it is kind of funny how a person tends to be drawn towards a certain type, eh?

By the way, I got the best lipgloss today. It tastes just like my Grandpa's homemade raspberry ice cream. Seriously. If you've ever had that, you know how awesome it tastes. If I were a boy, I'd want to kiss me right about now. I'm just saying. (and I don't know why this is underlined. Weird).

I've never thought about what kind of story I'd have with guys. Sigh. They'd probably be lame.

Katie, I totally love stalking your blog. You're an awesome writer and make me laugh and smile a lot. Especially this one - because we are now the proud owners of the Bezzants huge ol' van. They generously loaned it to us this summer when they realized we had more kids than could fit into any of our vehicles (seeing as we have 4 foster kids in addition to our own!) Then they gifted it to us at the end of the summer. It is a beast - I have yet to fall out of it - but some of my kids have. . .they feel your pain!

My mom always says she wants to write a book someday with all the stories of how people met their spouses. I hope she does, because it would be so fun to read!

Wow. I really think we are long lost sisters. I have always told my mom that I want an awesome story with my future hunk of a husband! I am always really careful of what I do as well, so I can tell my kids that their parents did it the right way and they can too. Oh and I really don't have a type, I have pretty much been all over the board, all though I really have a thing for Tongan men. Oh and older men. And I am going to stop before I reveal too much haha....dang it.

Well, I can't get 2 inches taller, but I can certainly up my workout schedule...

I love those stories, and I bet the people who tell them never get tired of doing so. Honestly though, I'm a bit disappointed in you Katie. As I was reading this post I thought to myself, "I really hope she ends this by describing her ideal romantic/ridiculous way of meeting her future husband." Sadly you didn't. Would you mind throwing that in there for your bff Ammon? :)

Oh man I loved this. I think about that ALL THE TIME. What my "story" of how I met my husband will be like. You are not the only one that does this :) It's funny when you have an ideal "type" in your head and then you end up with someone completely different. Although one common factor in guys I've dated has been they've all been over 6' tall which is weird cause I'm freakin SHORT 5'3". So they're always like a foot taller than me haha!
Oh I love those pulpit stories too! So fun!

You are so funny Katie! I totally had to laugh out loud at the story of you falling out of the van and your jam jar shattering everywhere. I am laughing again as I am typing this. I can't wait to hear your "pulpit story" someday. I am sure it will be very entertaining =)
